If my children could tell you about their dad, they would tell you about his sense of humor. They would tell of his devotion. They would tell of his cooking bacon Sunday mornings. They would tell you how he loves them fiercely. They would tell of how he kept their mama from being too serious because she could go overboard. They would tell how he is the one they call if something needs to be fixed because they know he can do it. Two of them would tell about sitting in his classroom. They would tell you how he keeps his classroom engaged, on task but fun. They would tell of how when he sits down after a meal he may need to rest his eyes just a minute when soon after there may be some snoring. They would tell you that their dad is the best dad for them.
And I would agree with them. I have witnessed the tears during and after each birth. And the tears at two weddings. I have seen all the celebrations and milestones he has enjoyed with his children. Helping with first car purchases. Giving advice for whatever they brought to him. I have seen him dropping everything if one of his children needed him. And now I am seeing him do the same with his grandchildren. I have had a front row seat for nearly 33 years of him being a dad. He has been the best dad for our children.
On this Father’s Day I am thankful for him and other dads. My own for providing a Christian home and laying the groundwork for my faith. My son-in-law for loving my girl and my grandchildren. For my brother and brothers-in-law for being dads their children can love. For the men who provide and guide their families in the love of Christ.
Dads don’t get enough recognition. There are still great dads out there. They work hard and remain faithful to their families. They love God first so their other relationships fall in pleasant places. Through the good and the bad they seek Him first.
Thank a dad today. Encourage him in what he does. Even if he isn’t your dad. Let him know you notice what he is doing.
Thank God for godly dads.
