Good Timing

Is there ever a good time to do the hard stuff? Putting it off until a better time is only a poor excuse. Procrastination only prolongs the inevitable. There is no place for procrastination in intentionality. It doesn’t fit. Planning to procrastinate is a paradox. The hard stuff will still be there after procrastination ends. Sometimes the delay can make it even harder.

Jesus didn’t delay. He knew the hard stuff was coming. He knew when it would happen. He knew more details than we can imagine. He went to meet it.

So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” John 18:4 (NASB95)

A world full of sinners seeking a Savior. The Savior came to meet us. He knew it would be hard because He created us. He knew our tendencies of selfishness, entitlement, stinginess, hatefulness, jealousy. None of that caused Him to procrastinate. None of that caused Him to delay stepping out to do the hard stuff. He chose the perfect time.

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6 (NASB95)

Helpless, ungodly people in desperate need of a Savior, only occasionally glancing over shoulders and around corners looking for salvation. When times get hard, we may turn to seek Him. In the back of our minds, we think we have all the time in the world to make the decision to truly seek Him and know Him. He will always be there waiting for us. There is no hurry.

For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 1 Thessalonians 5:2 (NASB95)

But there was that one friend. You know the one. The one that wrecked on the way home. He didn’t get a second glance over his shoulder. And you don’t know if he ever really came to know Jesus. And now you consider your own relationship with Him.

Procrastination doesn’t work very well. Ask the five foolish virgins from Matthew 25. They wanted to greet the bridegroom! But their preparations for his arrival were lacking. Their poor planning left them outside a closed door. A closed door that could not be reopened to them.

“And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. Matthew 25:10 (NASB95)

What are you waiting on? What excuse will you continue making to put off that step into grace? Are your excuses keeping you from making the best decision of your life? You can greet Him as you are and He will meet you there. He is more than capable of welcoming you just as you are.
